NEWBORN SESSION GUIDE

HOW TO PREPARE FOR YOUR NEWBORN PHOTO SESSION

There is nothing more rewarding then being apart of those most precious, tender moments of a new life. The connection of a new family, the love that is overflowing, and the miracle that has been brought into your lives!

  • Let’s pencil you in! We all know that a baby’s birthday can be unpredictable! Its best to contact me during your 2nd trimester-early 3rd trimester so we can pencil you in! It would be helpful if you could add me to “ the baby is born” list people to notify. That way we will have a better idea of when we need to book!

  • Booking your session! Newborn lifestyle sessions take place in the comfort of your own home. We will either limit ourselves to a designated area and or move around the house (nursery, bedroom, living area ect.). This captures your beautiful unique story! Sessions will be when light is most optimal in the house (as I am a natural light photographer) usually this means early to mid morning. I will ask that you a few weeks prior gage that time of day to help direct the time for your session. Note anything that you may not want captured in your photos please move or set aside prior to your session*

Newborn sessions are most successful when done in the first 7-10 days of birth. Most of the poses will be done when the baby is sleeping. We want to make sure baby is sleepy enough to handle them, after the 1st 10 days of life they become a bit more alert and discover the joys of stretching! Please do not worry if baby isn’t sleepy and is wide awake, we love to capture those precious moment too! ** Many families also choose to have their newborn session 4-6 weeks out, it’s truly preference to the family!**

  • Prepping baby! We want to make sure baby is as sleepy as possible, please try and keep baby awake for a good hour before your session! A well fed baby is a happy baby! Please feed and burp baby right before our session. This will help insure a nice sleepy “milk drunk” babe! We are also happy to take as many breaks as baby needs if he or she gets hungry during our session. Its tough work being a model! During that time if you are nursing or bottle feeding we will be capturing those sweet moments!

Loosen baby’s diaper about 30 mins before your session, or any clothing with waste bands that can leave imprints. Loosening them before gives them time to disappear.

  • The nitty gritty! Poop happens! Please do not be upset or feel bad if baby decides its time to go potty when he or she is in the buff of being photographed! This is very natural and its just part of the job!

  • Warm it up! Crank up that heat! Its very important that baby is nice and toasty when we are doing naked poses, and changing wraps! If they’re cold they’re likely going to be awake and or upset. I ask that the thermostat be around 80 degrees, if you’re sweating baby is likely perfect temp!

  • Volume! If able please keep a radio on low with music of choice.( baby has likely been jamming to it for the last 9 months!) When there is no noise the baby is likely to become easily startled.

  • Props! We have a nice selection of blankets, wraps and headbands! If there is anything special you would like to incorporate please have it ready for when we arrive! Typically less is more!

  • Timing! The session can take up to 1 hour. However baby is in charge so we like to give additional time for feeding, cuddles and calming baby!

  • What to wear! Neutral, calming tones. Again less is more, we want to stay away from bright colors, bold patterns, logos and socks! Mom’s loose flowy tops, maxi dresses are most flattering, simple jewelry is preferred! Also mom and dads hands will be in many of the photos. Please make sure they are well manicured.

The most important thing.. is we want you to be relaxed and comfortable! Bringing a new baby into the world is tiring and sometimes stressful! We are very experienced handling and posing newborns. You’re sweet babe is in safe hands! It can sometimes be best if mom steps away if baby is hard to settle. Their little noses know their mamas scent, and it can be hard for them to relax if they want to be in your arms.
